Remove Empty Folders
Over time, Google Drive accumulates empty folders — leftovers from reorganizations, deleted projects, or bulk moves. Drive Toolbox makes it easy to find and remove them.
Step 1: Filter for Empty Folders
Apply this filter to find folders with no contents:
is:folder AND size:eq:0
This shows all folders that contain zero files. The file table will list them with their locations so you can review.
Step 2: Review
Look through the results. Some empty folders may be intentional (placeholders for future content, shared folder structures, etc.). Sort by location or modified date to help identify folders that are safe to remove.
Step 3: Delete
- Select the folders you want to remove (or Select All Matching if you are confident)
- Click Delete in the selection toolbar
- Confirm in the dialog
Deleted folders go to Google Drive's trash. You can restore them from trash if needed.
Tips
- Scope by folder — use folder scoping to look for empty folders within a specific part of your Drive
- Check sharing — empty shared folders might be used by collaborators; check the Sharing Panel before deleting
- Nested empties — deleting a parent folder also deletes its empty subfolders, so you may not need to delete every level separately
